ABOUT THIS PROJECT
In September and October, 2019, I lived in Cabarete, a town in the Dominican Republic. I was blown away by number of motorcycles and scooters there and the laissez faire attitude of the riders. Barefoot or flip flops, football helmets or no helmets, one-handed or no-handed, sometimes five to a bike. Toddlers, seniors, and everyone in between.
Most of these pictures aren’t great as far as art goes, but I think they’re interesting. They were hard to capture because I was walking down the road (no sidewalks) and every time I stopped to snap a picture, one of the riders would stop and ask if I wanted a ride. Literally dozens of times a day. It wasn’t until I thought to ask a cop I’d be befriended to drive me around that I’d managed to snap a few good ones by racing beside them. Unfortunately I didn’t think to to this until the day before I left the island.
